Old Glory

Mar 01 2025
Magazine

If you love the spectacle of immaculately-restored old machinery, or are fascinated by Britain’s rich industrial and transport heritage, Old Glory is the magazine for you! In vivid detail it brings back all the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Glorious showman’s engines belt out the amperes to drive historic fairground rides; pairs of mighty steam ploughing engines turn the soil; steam rollers make up roads once more; tram wheel flanges squeal through town and city streets; colourful working narrowboats ply the canals; dray horses deliver good ale to the pubs; vintage tractors cough into life; stationary engines turn over tirelessly and the commercial vehicles we used to know take to the road again. This magazine covers these magnificent steam engines that once powered this nation. Whether you’re interested in the latest news, stories of steam engines saved from obscurity, upcoming events or detailed features on the history of these wonderful machines you’ll find it in Old Glory.

SPRING IS HERE

REBIRTH OF A COLONIAL MASTERPIECE • Marshalls tried to take on the North American traction engine manufacturers at their own game with their range of well-built Gainsboro colonial traction engines and had more success than most British steam manufacturers. We look at one that’s nearing completion after a total rebuild by clever engineer Richard Day.

NEW YEAR SALE

RECORD CROWDS IN SOMERSET • Considering the weather around the UK over 25-26 January, the Somerset Vintage Tractor Show at Shepton Mallet got away so lightly, with the wind particularly, at this excellently-organised show which this year featured Ford and Fordson tractors.

MINIATURES STAND OUT AT SHEFFIELD • The Sheffield Steam & Vintage Rally celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, with a great line-up of miniatures on hand to mark the occasion. David Reed was there to record it all.

MAJOR NORTH EAST CAVALCADE IS ‘ON’ • As we start a momentous year for railways with the ‘Railway 200’ celebrations, which mark the anniversary of the world’s first steam-hauled passenger train on a public railway in September 1825, what was thought by most industry insiders to be impossible is set to become reality if plans just announced come to fruition.

“A CURIOUS COMMER” – 1934 COMMER 8CWT VAN • Zack Stiling writes that Nigel Prosser wasn’t after anything too unusual when he decided he fancied a 1930s light van, but he ended up with a unique survivor, possibly a prototype, and the oldest of its kind. There’s a fascinating tale there. If only it wasn’t shrouded in mystery…

TIMBERRR…! • In part one of two, Steve Richards looks at timber tractors based on the AEC 0853 Matador.
